Tom’ Story

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone taking part in this special golf tournament – whether as a sponsor, a player, or a supporter. Your presence and generosity help us honour the life of someone who meant the world to us and to so many: Tom Barbetta.

Tom passed away last year through medical assistance in dying (MAID), after living with mental illness for much of his life. It was a decision made with clarity, dignity, and immense courage – a final act of love for someone who had fought for so long. But before we talk about that chapter of Tom’s story, we want to share the incredible person he was beyond his struggles.

Tom lived a full life, rich with joy, humour, friends and family. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved, whether spending long weekends at the cottage, travelling to new places, or enjoying a night at home filled with laughter. He was passionate about music and wrote three albums under his artist name, ‘Owney Madden’. He loved sports—especially hockey and golf—and was always someone you always hoped to play with and dreaded playing against.

For Tom, golf held a special place in his heart and in his favourite memories. It was a space to laugh, connect, and enjoy nature. Some of our best memories with him live out there on the course – regardless of the scorecard, Tom’s humour and company made each and every round with him one to remember.

Despite the challenges he faced, Tom always had an enormous capacity for love. He remained close with his family and never hesitated to say how much he loved and appreciated them. With an incredible memory for ‘the little things’, Tom always made those around him feel understood and valued. No matter the situation, he was always there for those he loved, to offer support and a smile. Tom’s humour, his courage, and his deep love for those around him—those are the things that truly defined him and made him so extraordinary.

It was this love and courage that led Tom to choose MAID to end his life in a peaceful and thoughtful way – a true gift to us, his family. The way Tom lived his life, and the way he chose to end it, is what makes him a hero to us. Tom chose love, always.

This tournament isn’t just about remembering Tom; it’s about carrying forward the light he brought into our lives. It’s about standing up for better mental health care and making sure others don’t have to face their battles alone.

We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for helping us honour someone so special. Tom’s bravery and resilience inspire us every day. His humour, kindness, and love continue to guide us. And we know he would be deeply touched – and probably cracking jokes – about all of us coming together, clubs in hand, to celebrate him.

With love and gratitude, The Barbetta Family
